ETSII students visit the ASTE solar thermal plants, in Ciudad Real

24/04/2015

As Part of the activities organised by the Fundación Elecnor Professorship of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency of the School of Industrial Engineering (ETSII) of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the first-year students of the Master in Industrial Engineering (Electrical and Energy specialisation) recently visited Elecnor's solar thermal plants in Ciudad Real.

Their visit was part of the subject entitled Ingenia, "Engineering an electrical system”. This is a new type of subject based on competences, in which the students, distributed in groups, build and develop a product. In this case, the product is a microgrid supplied with renewable energy, with two different businesses, generation and distribution (purchase of electric power), competing against each other in an electricity market.

Their day was rounded off with a class taught by Celso Peña, of the Engineering Sub-Department, who explained in detail the operation of a parabolic trough collector solar thermal plant and how it is constructed. Afterwards, they discussed safety in the plants, with special attention to the prevention of risks. Lastly, the students visited ASTE 1A and ASTE 1B accompanied by Elecnor staff, who showed them the installations in detail.

Promoting knowledge

The Fundación Elecnor Professorship of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency has the aim of enhancing university teaching and promoting R&D&I projects in this area.

Elecnor's collaboration with the university reinforces the students' training and prepares for their future roles in the world of work.

The agreement between Elecnor and the university pursues the aims noted above through numerous activities such as the traditional energy efficiency conferences, the teaching of master classes, the awarding of scholarships and prizes for final degree projects, research projects, observatories of ideas, and visits to the Group's installations like that described above.
