The Elecnor Foundation has developed the educational project ”Growing in Prevention” in close collaboration with the Directorate-General for Innovation and Educational Inclusion at the Department for Education and Employment of the Regional Government of Extremadura.
During 2021, the project ”Growing in Prevention” has been imparted in 56 centres in Extremadura, 4 of which provide special-needs education, and it has reached 3,178 pupils in the region. The educational project, funded by the Elecnor Foundation, is aimed at pupils in years 3, 4 and 5 of Primary Education. The objective has been to particularly involve centres in “Empty Spain” (a term for depopulated rural areas in Spain) and schools with a low proportion of pupils, as well as special-needs educational centres.
The educational project “Growing in Prevention” has been nominated for the UNESCO “Learning Heroes” prize on the International Day of Education.
“Growing in Prevention” offers the opportunity to raise awareness among pupils about the importance of creating habits related to risk prevention on a daily basis, placing a greater importance on COVID-19, through different activities online and in the classroom.
The project has a main session accessible via a web application, lasting approximately 50 minutes, for pupils in years 3, 4 and 5 of Primary Education. Through this online platform, audio-visual material and interactive games help pupils to discover the “3 S’s” Rule of Prevention: Stop, size up and suggest. They reflect on their own capabilities, the concepts of risk, danger, prevention and protection and specific actions which can protect them and prevent COVID-19.
The “Growing in Prevention” project has 3 main objectives:
- Making pupils and the educational community aware of the importance of educational guidance and risk prevention in all areas and facets of life, with the aim of getting them to incorporate what they have learned into their daily lives (with special emphasis on COVID-19) and their future professional lives.
- Providing educational resources to teachers and pupils which will allow them to work on the importance of risk prevention in the pupils’ everyday settings: at home, in the street and at school.
- Encouraging risk prevention in a familiar context through the involvement and participation of families in the pupils’ education and training.
