The Elecnor Foundation brings electrical energy to the 1,400 inhabitants of the Loma Atravesada community in the Dominican Republic

The Elecnor Foundation has inaugurated the Loma Atravesada project, the first to be implemented by the Foundation in the Dominican Republic. Elecnor has consolidated its presence in the country throughout the last three decades and has contributed to the development of the Dominican Republic’s electrical infrastructure. Building on this long history, Elecnor (through the Foundation) has taken a step further with the development of a social infrastructure project involving the construction of a 7-km long electrical line.

Present for the opening ceremony were Enriquillo Lalane, the governor of Samaná; Miguel Bezi, the mayor of Samaná; and Erquidenio Balbuena, the district director for Las Galeras. The company was represented by Fernando Azaola, the president of both Elecnor and the Elecnor Foundation, while General Coordinator Carlos Cano represented Aecid (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation).

“We’re extremely satisfied with the opening of the Loma Atravesada project, because it will help improve the economic development of this community and improve the living conditions of its inhabitants by giving them access to electricity, which is one of Elecnor’s strengths”, commented Fernando Azaola, the president of Elecnor and the Elecnor Foundation.

This project enables the Elecnor Foundation to bring electricity to a community that lacked both the basic energy infrastructure to light its homes and the resources to access the national grid, and as a result had to make use of gas- and oil-powered lamps. To guarantee that the system will function at an optimum level, junctions, meters and a basic structure giving residents light inside their homes and power for their domestic appliances was also installed. 1,400 inhabits will benefit from this project.

Additionally, the project will provide electricity to the area’s Elementary School, which is currently attended by 170 pupils. With this in mind, the installation of street lighting is also under consideration, along with the fitting of switches and plug sockets in all the classrooms.
